Beginners often try to improve padel by hitting harder. The faster route is usually the opposite: make fewer unforced errors, understand where to stand and learn the shots that create time.
1. Learn court position before advanced shots
Most beginner points are lost because players are in the wrong place, not because they lack a spectacular shot. Move together with your partner and understand when your pair owns the net.
2. Build a reliable lob
The lob is one of padel’s most important tactical tools. It can turn defence into attack and force opponents away from the net.
3. Stop fighting the glass
Letting the ball rebound off the back wall often gives you more time. Practise judging the rebound rather than taking every ball early.
4. Return more serves
A safe return that starts the point is more valuable than a low-percentage winner attempt.
5. Play with slightly better players
Good opponents expose positioning mistakes quickly. Combine match play with coaching and review. You can find coaches through our coach directory.
6–10. Communicate, volley simply, recover position, choose the right racket and review matches
Call balls early, keep first volleys controlled, recover after every shot, use equipment suited to your level, and occasionally record a match. Small feedback loops compound quickly.
